Skin Effect Heat Tracing System
1. Core Operating Principles
The system leverages three physical phenomena: Skin Effect, Proximity Effect, and Annular Effect.
System Architecture: It consists of a specialized "heat tube" (typically made of carbon steel, welded or attached to the process pipeline) and an insulated cable (the conductor) inserted inside the tube.
Current Path: An alternating current (AC) is applied to the internal conductor. The current travels to the far end of the pipeline and returns through the inner wall of the carbon steel heat tube, completing the circuit.
Physical Mechanism:
Skin Effect: At AC frequencies, current naturally concentrates on the surface of the conductor.
Proximity Effect: Due to the arrangement of the conductor within the tube, the current is forced to concentrate intensely on the inner surface of the carbon steel pipe.
Heat Generation: The concentrated current generates Joule heat within the tube wall. This heat is then transferred via conduction to the process pipeline and the medium contained within it.
Safety: Because the current is effectively trapped on the inner wall of the heat tube, the outer surface of the pipe remains at a zero potential (no induced voltage), ensuring high operational safety.
2. Key Advantages
This system is highly regarded in the petrochemical and energy sectors for its unmatched performance over long distances:
Extended Heating Distance: A single power source can provide heat for pipelines ranging from 15 to 25 kilometers in length, far exceeding the capabilities of traditional electric heating tapes.
High Reliability & Low Maintenance: The heating element is physically shielded by the steel tube. If the internal cable requires maintenance, it can be replaced without removing the thermal insulation of the main pipeline.
Intelligent Control: The system is compatible with modern automation, allowing for precise, remote temperature monitoring and power adjustment.
Versatile Environment Capability: It is robust enough to be used in above-ground, underground, or underwater installations and is suitable for hazardous, explosive environments.
3. Primary Applications
Oil & Gas Transport: Prevention of wax precipitation or freezing in long-haul crude oil and heavy fuel oil pipelines.
Industrial Processing: Maintaining specific process temperatures in long-distance chemical and industrial piping systems.
Large-Scale Infrastructure: Used in nuclear power plants, massive oil depots, and distribution transfer stations where extreme reliability is required.
